The Pub:

The Salty Cod is a locally owned and operated English style Pub located just off the historic downtown square in the vibrant, up-and-coming town of Athens, Alabama. The Salty Cod was established in September of 2023. The facility boasts ample indoor seating as well as a beautiful patio spaces, TVs, 2 large bars, and open kitchen. Our drinks selection and cocktail menus are not typical of the area. We maintain a British/European draft selection as well as a variety of bottled beers, ales and ciders from across Europe and USA. The pub’s concept is to bring something unique and different to Athens.

Our food menu focuses primarily on English and Irish fare, selections of perfectly grilled steaks, and contemporary twists on traditional dishes. The Pub also facilitates a Gelato, coffee and pastry shop as well as a full Butcher shop, specializing in dry aged steaks and meats.

We are eager to include local and seasonal ingredients on our menu and are constantly looking to better ourselves to please the public in every way possible. Our pub, with its authentic décor and warm inviting ambiance will make you feel like you are across the pond.

Drinks.

The Pub stocks a full bar of British, European and domestic ales, beers, ciders, spirits and wines as well as a cocktail menu.

Our drafts are all served in traditional 20oz British pint glasses and typically run below 5% ABV.

The Confessional Snug.

Historically “the snug” was a private room where ladies could enjoy a drink at a time when it was not proper for a woman to be seen in a pub. Nowadays, the snug can be enjoyed by a group of friends or family members to enjoy. Close the door and soak up a traditional experience that takes you back 100 years in time.

“ What is a pub”

The primary function of a pub is a place to drink. A place for everyone to feel welcome and have fun. Pubs may serve food, but it should always be possible to just go to a pub for a drink. A pub is not a restaurant.

Pubs would be expected to have several beers served from a keg (on tap). Anywhere selling beer purely in bottles would not generally be considered a pub. Pubs may also sell ciders, wines, spirits and of course soft drinks, but the primary focus of drinks sales would almost always be beer.

It's not required to sit down in a pub. It's quite common for many customers to stand in a pub, particularly busy pubs in town/city centers . It's usually not possible to book a table in a pub, unless it has a strong food theme, and even then there is typically a designated dining area set aside, with some tables nearer the bar left unreserved.

Pubs would not be expected to have dancefloors. Dancing is not at all common in pubs. Pubs may have background music , or may occasionally host live music, but a DJ would be very out of place in a pub. Pubs should have TV’s for showing sporting events, particularly football (soccer) and Rugby.

Pubs are typically open all day, in the daytime as well as the evening. A Pub is like a community center, friends old and new, family and colleagues meet there regularly for drinks and a quick bite. A pub welcomes people from all walks of life and everyone feels comfortable being there no matter what time of day.

A pub is not a Restaurant!
